The film tells the story of the young woman Veera (Rani Mukerji), who lives in a small village but dreams of playing cricket in the big league. She is mad about Sachin Tendulkar and is herself extremely talented in the game. Veera works in a nautanki and dances with the star performer, Shanno (Rakhi Sawant), an arrogant female who thinks no end of herself. She is very proud of her dance and talent. Rohan (Shahid Kapoor) is an accomplished captain of a county cricket team in England. His father, Vicky, and mother, Yamini, are separated. Rohan lives with his mother in England and his father lives in India. Vicky has been playing in the cricket match called the 'Aman Cup' against his friend, Lucky who lives in Pakistan. And every year, for 8 years, India has been losing the match. In order to win, Vicky pretends to have an heart attack and asks Rohan to come to India. When Rohan reaches India, he agrees to coach the team for his father. He is determined to make the team win. He holds an audition to select the best players and when Veera goes to audition, she is stopped by the security guard and not allowed to enter, because players have to be male. Then Veera disguises as a man named Veer and is accepted in the team. One day when Sonia(Sherlyn Chopra) throws a glass of juice in Veera's face, her facial hair falls, but she covers it and runs to the men's changing room, Rohan goes and looks for Veer, but finds Veera in the change room who pretends to be Veer's sister. He argues with her and later asks Veer to bring him to Veera to ask for an apology. Veera is stuck but manages to get out of the mess. Rohan's father tells Veera to change his son into a Hindustani so that he would not want to go back to England. Later on, Rohan falls in love with Veera as herself (he is not in love with Veer and does not even recognize that this is Veera). Rohan tells Veer to allow Veera to go on a date with him, and she goes. They both start to fall in love. Finally the day of the match arrives. Rohan's mother arrives at the match and Vicky is shocked but they have a great time together. In the match, Veer catches the ball making the other player out, Rohan comes and everyone hugs Veer. Then out of excitement, one of Veer's brown contact lenses falls out onto Rohan's finger and he finds out that Veer is Veera. He goes to the changing room and argues with her about her fraud and also playing with him. Rohan goes back to play the match without Veer. Veer is upset and changes back to Veera. Rohan's team is losing, and Vicky goes to Rohan and tells him that it isn't important to win or lose anymore. He tells him that at least through the match his mother came, he came and that this is all he wanted. But Rohan understands how badly his father wants to win the match and so Rohan asks his father to ask Veera to come and play the match. She plays and she injures herself and Rohan comes to her help. Veera sees the love for her in Rohan's eyes. In the end they win and Rohan asks Veer to show his true identity and everyone is shocked that she is a woman. Everybody accuses her of being a cheat and Veera then goes and gives a speech. Everybody realises that talented women should be allowed to play with men in cricket teams and gives her a round of applause. In the end, Rohan and Veera are reunited.
