Devdas (2002)

http://www.moviediva.com/MD_root/MDimages/Copy_of_Devdas.jpg

The son of Zamindar Narayan Mukherjee, Devdas (Shahrukh Khan) was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He grew up in the lush village of Taj Sonapur, where he spent his childhood, indulged by his lovely playmate Paro (Aishwarya). They grew up sharing a special relationship, in which they existed only to each other. Oblivious of all the differences of status and background, a bond that would never break grew between them. Slowly, it changed to love but it was still unsaid. But the reverie was broken when his family sent Devdas to London for education. Paro's world crashed knowing that her Devdas would be gone and she lit a diya, for it signified the fast coming back of her loved one. Years passed and Devdas returned. Devdas was besotted by her stunning beauty and longed to have her back. But Zamindar Narayan Mukherjee (Vijay Crishna), Devdas' father, met Paro's mother Sumitra's (Kiran Kher) marriage proposal with condescending arrogance. It caused a rift between the families and even though Devdas tried to convince his father, only antagonism came his way. Finally, he moved away from Paro and wrote a letter to her, asking her to forget him. Only, he didn't realize that he would never be able to forget her ever! And much later, when he reached out to her, it was too late as she was far too humiliated. She scorned him for not standing by her and they parted forever with a heart-broken Paro entering into a chaste marriage with a wealthy, much older man, Zamindar Bhuvan (Vijayendra Ghagte), while a shattered Devdas walked towards anguish, alcoholism & Chandramukhi (Madhuri Dixit). Chandramukhi, a stunning courtesan instantly lost her heart to Devdas. A unique bond was formed between both as he could share with her the intense pain of his unfulfilled love for Paro. Meanwhile, Paro, on the other hand, performed her worldly duties sincerely, but inside her heart, she could never forget Devdas for a moment. Strange was the fate of Devdas. Intensely loved by two women, who were never meant to be his. One whom he could never love and one whom he could never stop loving...

This is another formula film coming out of the latest edition of Indian producers' film manual......... put some Muslim names as terrorists, don't miss any opportunity to insult that religion, copy some scenes from Hollywood and old Indian movies and bingo......... I have never seen such a predictable movie before. The hero of the movie is first shown as a pilot or co-pilot when his wife got killed in some plane hijack and then he becomes the engineer and knows all the tricks and techniques about the airplanes. The plane is standing on the airport and Mr. Hero is digging in holes in plane's floor with a drill machine and no one listens to it. Looks like the movie is made in some hurry and no importance has been given to editing and script.

Phir Kabhi (2009)

V K Prakash's 'Phir Kabhi' is a beautiful piece of cinema. A film of a lifetime.

Surprisingly, this film didn't release in Cinemas, and was released on home-video and DTH services. A lovely film like this deserved to release in Cinemas, it could've been a huge success without doubt.

A story on senior citizens, 'Phir Kabhi' unfolds beautifully and ends the same. A simple story told in the neatest manner.

Performances are outstanding: Mithun Chakraborty is the soul of the film. The legendary actor delivers one of the strongest performances of his career. He's fantastic. Dimple is excellent; playing her part with amazing understanding. Rati is good in a cameo appearance. Rimoh Mithun Chakraborty makes a good debut as an actor, the son of the legendary actor is confident all the way. Gulshan Grover & Tinnu Anand are lovable in their roles. Neha Jhulka impresses. Others are perfect.

on the whole 'Phir Kabhi' is outstanding work of cinema. Two Big Thumbs Up!

Firaaq (2009)

Firaaq is a brave and hard hitting film that does raise many questions but leaves them unanswered.

Aided by excellent cinematography, brilliant editing and detailed art direction, the director raises the quality bar of the film several notches higher than the average Friday releases. Foe a debut, the film is cinematically brilliant.

Naseer is his usual sparkling best as the aging musician who lives in his own world of music, poetry and memories of a happier times. Raghubir Yadav as his caretaker works his own brand of magic by combining his typical subtle comedy with an enormous amount of pathos in his eyes at what he sees and doesn't want to see. His attempts at protecting his master from the harsh realities of the world outside is very touching.

Both Shahana Goswami as Muneera and her friend embody the spirit of the women on the streets in the times of rape and carnage and how despite everything their friendship and bonding remains intact. But as usual, friendship between a Muslim and Hindu, remain on the surface and somehow doesn't go deeper with its emotional impact.

Sanjay Suri and Tisca Chopra as Sameer and Anu provide an insight into the affluent and literate class, and their dilemmas are something one can easily identify with. The easy switching across different languages - Gujarati, Hindi & English - in their conversations is extremely charming and reminds one of how we are all part of different worlds that are enmeshed.

Dipti Naval is outstanding as the 'imprisoned' woman fighting her own ghosts and her attempts to regain her sanity by bringing home a Muslim boy and protecting him by giving him a Hindu name is a bit contrived, but she manages to make it look poignant. Paresh Rawal manages to sink his teeth even into the minuscule role he gets and thats hallmark of a good actor.

In today's world, the major source of relief, information and entertainment is the TV. So much so, that it has moved up from its modest position of being just another 'household appliance' to actually determining the power equation in a family. It is easy to identify the hierarchy in the family depending on who controls the remote control. So what happens when the TV realizes this power and begins to take control? What happens when instead of showing you the facts, the TV, begins to show you what it wants you to see? What happens when Manohar, to his great horror, realizes that this is exactly what is happening with his wonderful family, who has just moved into their sweet new home at 13B.
