Drinking water before meals helps weight loss

NEW YORK: Drinking two glasses of water before each meal may help you lose weight, according to a new study presented Monday at the annual meeting of the American Chemical Society in Boston.
Obese dieters who drank two 8-ounce glasses of water before breakfast, lunch and dinner lost five pounds more than dieters who didn’t increase their water intake. Those who drank more water also kept more of the weight off after a year, said Brenda Davy, an associate professor at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg.
The study included only middle-aged and older adults between the ages of 55 and 75 who were on diet – 1,200 calories per day for women and 1,500 calories per day for men. Half of the people were told to drink 16 ounces of water before every meal. After three months, the dieters who drank water had lost an average of about 15.5 pounds, while those who didn’t lost just 11 pounds.

Skipping Breakfast bad for teeth

Kids who skip breakfast have a more than 250 percent increased risk for developing tooth decay, according to a study of more than 4,000 children aged 2 through 5 years published in the January 2004 Journal of the American Dental Association. This dramatic effect was demonstrated in affluent families across America. Even those who ate sugary, junk food cereal for breakfast (not what I would suggest!) were far less likely to develop cavities than those who skipped breakfast entirely.
In our rushed modern lifestyle, many children miss out on breakfast, leaving their bodies hungry even when they are not aware of it.
We’ve known for a while that eating breakfast has many health benefits, including better school performance and a lower risk of obesity. And teens who skip breakfast tend to smoke more, weight more, and drink more. Now we know that eating breakfast can protect the teeth as well.
In addition, children in this study who ate five servings a day of fruits and vegetables had dramatically healthier teeth than their peers. What and when we eat can help build healthy smiles.

World's most powerful Microscope

Scientists have developed what they say is the world's most powerful optical microscope that can allow them to watch live viruses in action.

British researchers who helped develop the microsphere claimed that the instrument is capable of examining objects as small as 50 nanometres across -- 20 times smaller than the present limit for optical microscopes.

"This is a world record in terms of how small an optical microscope can go by direct imaging under a light source covering the whole range of optical spectrum, said Prof Lin Li from the University of Manchester who led the project with colleagues from Singapore.

"Not only have we been able to see items of 50 nanometres, we believe that is just the start and we will be able to see far smaller items," Prof Lin was quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.

There are 10 million nanometres in a centimetre. And the researchers said the new microscope would allow scientists to look at tiny details inside cells and even "live" viruses. A cold virus is 20 nanometres in diameter.

"Theoretically, there is no limit on how small an object we will be able to see," said Prof Lin.

Electron microscopes, which use a focused beam of electrons instead of light, can image extremely small objects but have limitations.

Either they are designed only to view surface details, or they require extremely thin specimen sections, making it difficult to image fine biological structures.

But, the new instrument employs "superlenses" in the form of tiny "microspheres" -- which are small spherical particles-- to push the technical boundaries of optical microscopes.

Prof Lin said: "The common way of seeing tiny items presently is with an electron microscope, and even then you cannot see inside a cell - only the outside.

"Optical fluoresce microscopes can see inside the cells indirectly by dying them, but these dyes cannot penetrate viruses.

"Seeing inside a cell directly without dying and seeing living viruses directly could revolutionise the way cells are studied and allow us to examine closely viruses and biomedicine for the first time."

The new instrument was described in the journal Nature Communications.

The 10 Strangest Laws Around the World

01. Singapore
In a bid to keep the streets of this super-efficient city clean, the authorities in Singapore decided in 1992 to ban chewing gum completely. Stick to a mint. 09 More after the break...
02. Eraclea, Italy
Many holidaymakers head to the sandy beach at Eraclea to escape the hordes of tourists in nearby Venice. Unfortunately, those who enjoy building sandcastles can think again – it’s forbidden.

03. Amsterdam, Netherlands
A curious loophole in the law means that smoking tobacco in a public place such as a coffee shop in Amsterdam is banned, while puffing away on pure cannabis is entirely legal.

04. South-East Asia
The durian, a fruit native to Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia, has a smell so incredibly strong that it is banned from many public places in South-East Asia.

05. Florida, USA
For those who are young, free and single and enjoy jumping out of planes in their spare time, be careful if you’re in Florida – unmarried women who parachute on Sundays can be jailed.

06. Switzerland
Bizarrely, flushing the toilet in a Swiss apartment is illegal after 10pm. It is also against the law for a man to relieve himself while standing up after 10pm.

07. Eboli, Italy
Honeymooners might be best to avoid hiring a car in Eboli, just south of Naples. Kissing in a moving vehicle here can carry a fine of up to €500.

08. Capri, Italy
Locals in Capri, northern Italy, must value their peace and quiet – a couple were arrested recently for wearing excessively noisy flip-flops, following the introduction of a ban on ‘noisy footwear’.

09. Alabama, USA
The Southern American state has a quite superfluous law in place which states that it’s illegal to be blindfolded while driving a vehicle.

10. Dubai, UAE
Dubai’s luxurious resorts and stunning beaches may seem like the ideal place to spend a romantic holiday, but don’t get too affectionate – kissing in public here is illegal, and many tourists have fallen foul of this law in recent years.
